4. Communication
Dementia may alter a person’s mood, which can change from day to day. This can make communication difficult and add to the distress carers may already be feeling. There are different techniques that people can try. Some carers may find these suggestions helpful:
- Offering choice – shall we go before or after having a cup of tea?
- Clear explanation of what they are going to do
- Being very directive – this is what we are going to do next
- Encouragement – I think you’ll feel more comfortable
More information on communication can be found on the family and friends section of this website.
“Often, if the carer is a family member they just want somebody to hear what they are going through and to voice all their concerns and get that little bit of reassurance.”
